Shapes vary from a simple square, to a cross, star shape or Celtic cross giving four potential fixing positions. Lowe and Fletcher produce a hexagonal one which can be fixed in eight different positions. It's important to ensure that you order the type relevant to the lock manufacturer. All cams are measured from the centre of the fixing hole to the end of the cam this is worth taking note when looking for a replacement cam for your lock.

Cranked cams unlike straight cams are offset and can be cranked towards the lock face or away from the lock face. The offset depends on the specification of the furniture or locker it is being fitted to and will vary greatly between manufacturers and different locker ranges.
