More on Cams

Cranked Cams

Cranked cams also get referred to as bent cams. Each lock manufacturer makes their own type of cam fixing point. Shapes vary from a simple square, to a cross, star shape or Celtic cross giving four potential fixing positions. Lowe and Fletcher produce a hexagonal one which can be fixed in eight different positions. It's important to ensure that you order the type relevant to the lock manufacturer. All cams are measured from the centre of the fixing hole to the end of the cam this is worth taking note when looking for a replacement cam for your lock.

Cranked cams unlike straight cams are offset and can be cranked towards the lock face or away from the lock face. The offset depends on the specification of the furniture or locker it is being fitted to and will vary greatly between manufacturers and different locker ranges.

Hooked Cams

Hooked cams are most likely to be used on tambour locks and are quite common on key cabinets and cash boxes. Each lock manufacturer makes their own type of cam fixing point. Shapes vary from a simple square, to a cross giving four potential fixing positions. Lowe and Fletcher produce a hexagonal one which can be fixed in eight different positions.

Hooked cams can also be cranked/offset. The length of a hooked cam is measured differently from the others as the important dimension is the location of the hook. So instead of measuring from the centre of the cam hole to the end of the cam, you measure to the edge of the hook. The use of a hook can be used to fit behind a slot on such devices as a cashbox for example which will lock the device securely.

Straight Cams

Straight cams, also referred to as flat cams are the rotating locking bar situated on most cam and tambour locks. Each lock manufacturer makes their own type of cam fixing point. Shapes vary from a simple square, to a cross giving four potential fixing positions. Lowe and Fletcher produce a hexagonal one which can be fixed in eight positions. It's important to ensure that you order the type relevant to the lock manufacturer. Straight and cranked cams are measured from the centre of the fixing hole to the end of the cam this is worth taking note when looking for a replacement cam for your lock.
