More On Euro Profile Single Cylinders

Euro cylinder locks are also one of the most popular choices for new installations and are found in both residential and commercial settings. One of the main advantages of installing cylinder locks is the ease of access when changing the mechanism, without having to touch the bolt.

    What is a Cylinder Lock?

The cylinder lock is behind the most traditional locks in a house where a key with notches in it activates the locking mechanism. The cylinder runs through the door, and when you insert the key, the tang, which is in the centre, moves partly inside the cylinder. When you unlock the door, the tang sits in in the centre of the cylinder.

    How Euro Cylinder Locks Work

Using a key, the cylinder within the lock mechanism turns, sending the tang into a locked position, which ensures the door does not move. The tang keeps the door secure and locked until a key triggers the lock mechanism and releases the tang. On some models there is a release or trigger button that functions the same as a key, and triggers the same process, however, this only works from the inside and a key is still needed to lock and unlock the door from the outside.

    How the Key Works

Cylinder locks work with a specific key, so only one key will work with a specific lock, as only that key releases the pins inside the cylinder to open the door. The pins inside the cylinder are set at different heights, and held in place by springs. The upper pins are the ones that prevent the turning of the cylinder when in a locked position, and prevent the door from opening. When the door is unlocked, the pins are released so the cylinder can turn and the door can open.

The notches in keys move the pins into the correct position to enable the turning of the cylinder so it triggers the unlocking mechanism. If the pins are not in the correct position and at the correct height, the key will not turn and the door remains locked.

    Advantages of euro cylinder locks

    • Changing the lock is easy because it is not necessary to remove the lock mechanism and fittings, only the cylinder itself. Removing the cylinder is a simple task, with the removal of a couple of screws, allowing for a quick turnaround time.
    • Cylinder locks have multiple configuration options and can hold different types of locking mechanisms including a disc tumbler, wafer tumbler or pin tumbler. Different mechanisms work with a common key, so one lock can use a wafer tumbler, another can use a disc tumbler, and both work the same key.
    • The process of re-keying the mechanism only requires the removal of a couple of screws, and a professional locksmith can re-key a euro cylinder lock in a few minutes.
    • Security features of high quality euro cylinder locks make them anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick, and anti-pull.

    Changing Euro Cylinder Locks

The first step is to remove the screws on the side of the door plate, then place the key in the lock and pull it outwards as the key is turned slowly. The cylinder comes out easily, and the replacement cylinder can be installed just as easily.

It is important to measure the cylinder before buying a replacement to ensure a correct fit. Rather than guessing the size, the best way to do it is by removing the cylinder and using a tape measure or ruler to get an exact measurement.

Getting a professional to install locks is a good option there is more than one lock involved. While euro cylinder locks have the advantage of being very easy to change, it can be a time-consuming process for someone without experience. A locksmith will take a fraction of the time it takes a layperson to change the same lock, for example in the case of same key or master key systems, when several locks need to be changed.

How often should locks be changed?

There are several reasons for changing locks and cylinder locks make this easy to do.

    • After tenants move out. Even if the tenants give you back a set of keys, there is no way to know if they have made and kept another set of keys. These could be used to gain access to the property at a later date unless the locks are changed as soon as they leave. This applies to a rented property or after someone leaves a shared house.
    • When keys are lost It is tempting to think it is not necessary to change the locks if keys are lost far from the house, on a shopping trip, or on holiday. However, there is no guarantee that the person who picks up the keys does not know the location of the house, and could use them to gain access.
    • After having work done on the house workmen are sometimes given keys when they do work on a property if it is not practical for the homeowner to oversee the work personally. Once the work is finished, it is advisable to change the locks to guarantee they no longer have access to the property.
    • As soon as you move into a new house, it is impossible to know who else has a set of keys, so it is always sensible to change the locks.
    • Some manufacturers recommend changing locks every five as a precautionary measure to guarantee the effectiveness of the lock.

Euro cylinder locks are so popular and their use is so widespread, because they provide the perfect combination of price, quality, and security.
